About Lyle Bucher
Mr. Lyle Bucher was the benefactor of the 20 acres of land that became Bucher Prairie. Lyle was born in April of 1944 to Clifford and Eva Bucher. In youth, he grew up north of the current park on the family farm where he raised animals to show at 4-H and learned to enjoy a practical joke. Shortly after high school graduation from Garretson High School, he served his country aboard the USS Constellation during the Vietnam War. While in Vietnam, Lyle earned the Vietnam Campaign Medal, a Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, and a Purple Heart. Lyle’s generosity was apparent when he donated his 20-acre portion of the Eva Bucher estate to Minnehaha County on June 16, 2009
Clifford raised purebred hogs and sold Trojan seed corn while Eva was creative with wood and enjoyed gardening and her flowers. The estate was divided after the passing of Eva Bucher in 2008, and Lyle Bucher donated his portion to Minnehaha County.
About the Bucher Family
Lyle was the son of Clifford and Eva Bucher. The land was purchased in 1943 by Clifford Bucher and farmed until his death in 1987. The families of Henry, Bert, and Clifford Bucher have farmed in the area since 1898.
Clifford Bucher married Eva Scott on November 30, 1939 in Garretson. While raising their family, the couple farmed in the Garretson area until retiring in 1974. Clifford died December 11, 1987, and Eva continued to live on the farm until 2000. They were members of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church.
